Author Guidelines

Hume Studies welcomes submissions on any aspect of the life, thought, intellectual milieu, or reception of David Hume. Submissions must be prepared for anonymous review. Any self-references must be in the third person. File “document properties” must be set to remove personal information. Authors should observe the Journal Style Sheet in the preparation of their papers. Submission files should be in Word (*.docx/*.doc), rich text format (*.rtf), plain text (*.txt), or open document text (*.odt) and should include an abstract of no more than 600 words; a list of 6 to 10 keywords (including “Hume, David”); and a list of digital object identifiers (DOIs) for all secondary sources cited that have one. Authors who do not already have an ORCID-iD are requested to obtain one prior to publication.

Submissions will be reviewed by an editor to ensure they are in line with the journal’s objectives and scope and meet the minimum quality standards. Those deemed suitable are forwarded for peer review. Before submitting, please ensure that the paper’s design and argument are clear and concise and that references, works cited entries, and discussion elements are directly pertinent to the project and not included simply for the purpose of displaying erudition. The title should be informative, and the abstract should be self-contained. This increases the likelihood that reviewers will wish to assess the paper. Keywords should be carefully chosen. Once you are satisfied that your paper meets these standards, please follow the checklist below to prepare your submission.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • No part of the submission has been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • The submission was generated in compliance with the AI usage guidelines
  • All references to my own work are in the third person. The paper and abstract contain no identifying information (including in the document properties) that would compromise anonymous review.
  • The submission contains no material that might be construed as an infringement of copyright, as libelous, or as otherwise actionable.
  • All references to Hume's works are as specified in the Bibliographical Note
  • I have included an abstract and keyword list at the head of the submission and supplied the same keywords when prompted in this submission process.
  • I have supplied DOI’s for all works cited that have one, and included them where prompted in the submission process.
  • I have indicated in the "Comments" box whether I qualify for the Hume Studies Prize competition (i.e., whether I am ten or fewer years from the Ph.D.). No comment = no.
  • The submission file is in Word (*.docx/*.doc), Rich Text format (*.rtf), Plain Text (*.txt), Open Document Text (*.odt).
  • The text has been optimized for online review (single spaced with footnotes rather than endnotes; no right margin justification). If the paper is accepted and before it goes to copy-editing, I will ensure that it adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Journal Style Sheet.
  • I have included my ORCID iD along with my other submission information (or if I do not have one will obtain one prior to publication). It is not included in my paper itself.

Copyright to Hume Studies is held by the Hume Society. Authors are free to reuse their own articles in other publications they write or edit on condition of acknowledgement of original publication in Hume Studies. They are also encouraged to post their preprint (pre-peer review) or accepted (post-peer review but not typeset) articles to personal and personalized professional websites on condition that they reference the formally peer-reviewed, copy-edited, and typeset version that appears in Hume Studies as the “version of record” of their work and stipulate that all citations and references should be drawn from it. Permission is required for republication by anyone other than the author in any anthology, textbook, monograph, journal, database, or web site. Contact the editors for more information.
